Timberwolves vs Nuggets Game 5 Prediction: Jokic Takes Over as Minnesota Plays Without Edwards

Anthony Edwards is out with a knee injury and Minnesota heads to Denver down in talent but still up 3-1 in the series. Jokic at home in an elimination-or-advance game is a terrifying proposition.

Monday night’s final NBA game carries more drama than almost any other matchup in the first round. The Minnesota Timberwolves travel to Ball Arena in Denver for Game 5 holding a commanding 3-1 series lead over the Nuggets, but they will be without their best player. Anthony Edwards suffered a bone bruise and hyperextension of his left knee in Game 4 and is expected to miss multiple weeks, taking him out of Game 5 entirely. Donte DiVincenzo also went down with a torn Achilles in the same game. Despite leading the series, Minnesota is now the massive underdog Monday night as Denver tries to save its season and force a Game 6.

Denver is a Big Favorite as Minnesota Plays Shorthanded

The injury news has flipped this game’s betting dynamics completely. Denver opened as a slight favorite but has surged to -500 on the moneyline following Edwards’ news, with Minnesota at +375. The spread is Denver -10.5 to -11 depending on the book, with the Wolves at plus the points and the over/under set at 222 to 222.5. While Denver is a massive favorite, the Timberwolves actually lead 3-1 in the series, and Minnesota is still -150 to win the series overall. The betting line on this individual game reflects Edwards’ absence almost entirely — the Wolves were the team that just won Game 4 handily before his injury, and their depth still makes them a dangerous opponent even without their star.

Jokic Must Be Great While the Wolves Adjust Without Their Franchise Player

Nikola Jokic is the heart of Denver’s offense and has the ceiling to be the difference-maker in a game like this. The three-time MVP averaged big numbers in the regular season and has been excellent in this series despite his team losing three of four games. His ability to create in the post, facilitate from anywhere on the floor, and manufacture offense for others makes Denver’s entire ecosystem run. Jamal Murray adds another dimension — he led the Nuggets with 30 points in Game 4 and is capable of explosive scoring nights when given space. Peyton Watson remains sidelined with a hamstring injury, limiting Denver’s defensive versatility off the bench.

Minnesota’s adjustment without Edwards will be fascinating to watch. Ayo Dosunmu exploded for a career-high 43 points off the bench in Game 4, stepping into the vacuum Edwards typically fills. If Dosunmu can repeat even a fraction of that performance, the Wolves remain dangerous despite their depleted roster. Jaden McDaniels averaged 18.7 points in 16 games without Edwards this regular season, compared to 13.8 points alongside him, and takes 3.6 more shots per game when the star is out. Naz Reid provides rim presence and pop from the elbow. This is a Timberwolves team that showed it can win without its best player — and they need to do it once more to advance.

The series context matters enormously here. Minnesota has beaten Denver three times in these playoffs, and Games 2 and 3 were both won without particularly dominating performances from Edwards himself. The Wolves’ defense, ranked in the top five all season, doesn’t disappear when Edwards exits. Denver is the better team on paper Monday night given the circumstances, but “on paper” doesn’t always translate to what happens at Ball Arena.

Prediction and Best Bet

Denver has the talent and the desperation to win this game, and Jokic with his back against the wall at home is as dangerous as any player in basketball. Minnesota will fight, but the combination of Edwards’ absence, DiVincenzo’s loss, and a Nuggets team that needs a win to stay alive creates the conditions for a lopsided Denver victory.

  • Prediction: Nuggets 122, Timberwolves 108
  • Best Bet: Denver Nuggets -10.5 (-110)

A desperate Jokic at home against a Minnesota team missing its two best guards is a spot where Denver covers double digits. The Nuggets have the firepower, the motivation, and the venue to deliver a convincing win and force Game 6 back in Minneapolis.
