We are just one day away from the official start of the 2025 NBA All-Star break. For some teams like the Pelicans, Jazz, and Heat - it is a much-needed week of relaxation that will hopefully end up in a gear shift for the second half of the season. For Miami, they might have found something in Davion Mitchell, who completely fits the culture they are trying to rebuild there. Expect him to get additional minutes tonight against Dallas.
Elsewhere, New Orleans is playing a back-to-back against Sacramento, and with Zion Williamson potentially on a restriction tonight, look for C.J. McCollum to make an impact from beyond the arc for the Pels who have lost ten straight.
The New Orleans Pelicans are limping into the All-Star break, losers of their last ten games. With the departure of Brandon Ingram and the sporadic play of Zion Williamson, it is fair to say Willie Green’s squad is in no-man’s land and it doesn’t totally feel like it is his fault. Williamson will surely be put on a restriction tonight if he even touches the floor. He’s only played in one back-to-back this season and scored just 12 points in that outing.
Willie Green emphasized the 3-point differential in last night’s matchup between these two teams where Sacramento hit 16 threes to the Pelicans 8 threes. The answer? C.J. McCollum had an off-night, shooting 0-5 from deep but still has shot it at a 45% clip from beyond the arc this month. Expect the sharpshooter to get his rhythm back in a home game, where he averages 39% on 3.6 3PM from beyond the arc.
Utah’s rookie guard Isaiah Collier is slowly creeping his way into the Rookie of the Year conversation. While he won’t win the award while on the 13-40 rebuilding Utah Jazz, Collier had an outstanding January and is currently amidst a breakout February. The speedy one-and-done USC guard has averaged 12.7 PPG, 4.0 RPG, and 9.8 APG this month in six games.
Coach Will Hardy likes what he sees in the undersized guard who plays with a ton of energy, hustle, and physicality. Collier went for 27 and 26 PRA against the Lakers in their two matchups this week. Against a Clippers team at home - where he shoots the ball much better - I’m banking on heavy Collier minutes in what could be a trap game before the All-Star break.
Davion Mitchell fits the Riley & Spo culture. They will be sure to reward him with some extended minutes just before the Heat head back to their couches for a much-needed break. Mitchell was supposedly on Riley’s radar since the 2021 draft cycle, leading the Baylor Bears to that 2020 National Championship title where they beat Gonzaga. Mitchell played 35 minutes last night against the Thunder, where Miami kept it tight until the 4th quarter. Davion scored 14 points on 10 FGA. Expect more of the same tonight against a Dallas team searching for answers on defense with most of their starting rotation in street clothes.
