This is the most competitive series in the Eastern Conference first round, and it has been an absolute treat for NBA fans. The New York Knicks and Atlanta Hawks have traded blows through four games, with neither team able to string together back-to-back wins. New York took Games 1 and 4, while Atlanta stole the middle portion of the series by winning Games 2 and 3 on their home floor. Now the series returns to Madison Square Garden for Game 5 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock, and the Knicks have a chance to finally take control heading into a potential clinching situation.

New York finished the regular season with 53 wins and 29 losses, one of the top four records in the Eastern Conference. The Knicks have the star power in Karl-Anthony Towns and Jalen Brunson, the home-court edge of MSG, and the advantage of getting to host Game 5 after the Hawks grabbed the last road win. Atlanta, at 46-36, has overachieved in this series and shown they are a legitimate playoff team under their coaching staff — but the talent gap between these two rosters becomes more apparent as the series extends and fatigue sets in.

New York Installed as Solid Favorites at the Garden

The Knicks are 6.5-point favorites for Game 5, with the moneyline set at New York -258 to -290 and Atlanta at +205 to +235. The over/under sits at 213.5 points. These odds opened slightly tighter and have moved toward New York as the betting public and sharp action have both favored the home team.

The implied win probability for the Knicks is around 73-74%, which represents a meaningful edge but not an overwhelming one. This series has been so competitive that you cannot completely discount the Hawks, who have already shown they can win at MSG — they stole Game 3 in New York by one point. But the Knicks’ home record was exceptional this season (30-10 at Madison Square Garden), and that factor cannot be ignored in a game of this magnitude.

Towns and Brunson Need to Assert Themselves for New York

Karl-Anthony Towns delivered a triple-double in Game 4 to help the Knicks even the series, and that kind of performance is exactly what New York needs from their big man in a home playoff game. Towns has the ability to dominate this matchup — he can score from everywhere on the floor, rebound at an elite level, and create mismatches on the perimeter that Atlanta has struggled to handle. When Towns is assertive early, the Knicks’ offense operates at a different level entirely.

Jalen Brunson has been reliable as always, using his craftiness and mid-range efficiency to keep the Knicks’ offense moving even when the shots are not falling. Mikal Bridges adds versatile scoring and defensive intensity, and the Knicks’ second unit has been one of the more effective bench groups in the playoffs so far. New York’s depth is a genuine advantage over the Hawks, who rely heavily on their starting five.

For Atlanta, Trae Young remains the key variable. When Young is in rhythm — pushing the pace, hitting floaters, and finding cutters with his exceptional passing — the Hawks are nearly impossible to guard in the halfcourt. But New York’s size and length bother him, and the Knicks’ defensive scheme has done a reasonable job of taking away his favorite spots on the floor. Dyson Daniels, who has emerged as one of the better two-way guards in the Eastern Conference, needs to come up big alongside Young if Atlanta is going to pull off another road win.

Other Game Picks

The injury report is clean for both teams, with Atlanta only missing Jock Landale to an ankle issue. He’s a backup center who sees limited minutes, so his absence does not significantly impact Atlanta’s rotation. New York is fully healthy heading into Game 5, which is a luxury for a team that needs all hands on deck in a pivotal game.

The head-to-head in Game 5 situations at Madison Square Garden historically goes in the Knicks’ favor. This building creates an energy that is unmatched in the NBA, and the crowd will be at its absolute loudest for a potential series-clinching game. Atlanta took Game 3 there, but the Knicks’ ability to bounce back in Game 4 suggests they are not rattled by the series’ back-and-forth nature.

Advanced models project a final score around 118-112 in New York’s favor, which aligns with the spread and suggests a competitive game that the Knicks manage to control down the stretch. The Knicks have covered the -6.5 spread in 9 of their 13 games as a favorite by at least this margin this season, and the Hawks have failed to cover when they have been this big of a road underdog in similar situations.

Prediction and Best Bet

The Knicks win Game 5 at Madison Square Garden to take a 3-2 series lead and put themselves in the driver’s seat heading into a potential closeout game in Atlanta. New York’s home advantage and talent depth will be the deciding factors.

  • Prediction: New York 118, Atlanta 112
  • Best Bet: Knicks -6.5

New York covering -6.5 at home is the strongest play in this game. The Knicks have been outstanding at MSG this season, and Game 5 with series momentum on the line is exactly the kind of game where home teams tend to assert themselves. Atlanta has enough talent to keep it close for three quarters, but the Knicks’ depth and home-court energy should create separation in the fourth quarter when it matters most.
