College football fans just survived one of the wildest weekends in recent memory, with five of the top seven teams going down and Miami climbing to No. 1 for the first time since 2002. Week 8 brings the aftershocks, and it comes with two ranked-versus-ranked showdowns, a ranked underdog in Columbia, and a Big Ten rivalry game in Ann Arbor with real revenge on the line. Here is your what-to-watch roundup, with a spread to keep in mind for each game, so you can plan your Saturday around the games worth your couch time.
No. 7 Ole Miss at No. 19 Texas: Manning vs. Chambliss in prime time
If you only circle one game, circle this one. Ole Miss (5-1) rolls into Austin on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC, and Texas (4-2) is a small home favorite, roughly three points depending on the book, with the total sitting around 53.5. The storyline writes itself: Arch Manning, nephew of Ole Miss legend Eli Manning, against Rebels quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, with the Longhorns trying to keep a rocky season from slipping away after close losses to Oklahoma and Florida.
Ole Miss arrives hot. The Rebels beat Missouri 31-3 behind a ground game that topped 220 rushing yards, with Kewan Lacy piling up 122 yards on just 16 carries. That is the kind of efficiency that makes a defense dizzy. Texas has been its own worst enemy on offense, with a 34.3 percent three-and-out rate, and the Longhorns may be without edge rusher Colin Simmons, who is dealing with a high ankle sprain. Losing a disruptive pass rusher against a quarterback as slippery as Chambliss is a real problem.
The fun part for neutral viewers is the stakes. Both teams still have College Football Playoff hopes, and a loss would sting for whoever walks away empty handed. Expect points, expect swings, and expect plenty of snacks to disappear before the fourth quarter. No. 14 Houston at No. 10 Utah: the late-night Big 12 showdown
Night owls get their reward at 10:15 p.m. ET on ESPN, when Houston (6-1) visits an unbeaten Utah team (6-0) at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Utah is a 6.5-point favorite with the total at 56.5, and this one carries Big 12 title and playoff implications. The winner gets the inside track, and the loser has some work to do.
Utah has won five of its six games by at least two touchdowns, though it needed a sluggish 27-24 escape against Colorado in its last outing. The Utes also run one of the most entertaining offenses in the country, using both Devon Dampier and backup Byrd Ficklin in different sets, with Ficklin lining up at receiver and running back and averaging 6.9 yards per carry. On the other side, Houston has been a buzzsaw since its two-point-conversion loss to Texas Tech. Last week the Cougars held Oklahoma State to just three first-half points in a 35-32 win, with quarterback Conner Weigman posting nearly 400 total yards and five touchdowns.
There is a fun bit of history here too. Houston has won all five previous meetings with Utah, including a 17-14 stunner in 2024 on a game-ending field goal. Utah still has to face BYU and Arizona down the stretch, so this is the kind of game that shapes the whole Big 12 picture.
No. 2 BYU at UCF: can the Cougars survive the Bounce House?
Last week BYU stunned Notre Dame 28-24 on a Bear Bachmeier touchdown pass to Walker Lyons, vaulting the Cougars to No. 2 in the AP poll, their highest ranking since the 1984 national championship season. Now they have to follow it up on the road at 3:30 p.m. ET on FOX against a UCF team that is 3-3 and coming off a bye. BYU is a 6.5-point favorite, and the total is a low 43.5.
Bachmeier has been fantastic, piling up 1,257 passing yards and 284 rushing yards this season, and BYU is 6-0 against the spread. But this is the classic letdown spot after a landmark win, and UCF has a run defense that ranks among the better units in the country by opponent EPA per rush. That is the kind of matchup that makes a spread feel tighter than it looks. It is a great one to have on in the background while the afternoon slate plays out.
Tennessee at South Carolina: a ranked team as the underdog
Here is the oddity of the week. No. 11 Tennessee (6-1) is an underdog, with South Carolina (3-3) favored by 2.5 points at home in Columbia at 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. The total is 50.5. Tennessee has covered four times in seven games and is 2-0 against the spread as an underdog of 2.5 points or more this season, while South Carolina averages 37.7 points per game and has seen four of its six games go over the total.
That combination points to a track meet in Williams-Brice Stadium, and a ranked-team-in-danger game is always more fun than a blowout. If you are scanning the slate for chaos, this is a prime candidate.
More games worth keeping on the remote
The early window has some color too. No. 6 Indiana visits Michigan at noon ET on FOX, with the Hoosiers (6-1) coming off a 19-15 loss to Ohio State and the Wolverines (4-2) fresh off a 21-18 win over Penn State, giving Michigan a chance at a second top-10 win under Kyle Whittingham, and Indiana is a 7.5-point favorite with a total of 41.5. No. 18 LSU visits Auburn at noon on ABC as a 7.5-point favorite, and No. 8 Texas Tech travels to Cincinnati as an 11.5-point favorite on FS1. This Week’s Best Bets and Best Watches
Our picks lean into the games where the number looks a little off. Remember that lines move, so shop around before you place anything, and only bet what you can afford to lose.
- Ole Miss at Texas: Ole Miss +3.5, because the Rebels’ ground game and Texas’s offensive struggles make this closer to a toss-up.
- Houston at Utah: Houston +6.5, since the Cougars have been rolling and a near-touchdown line feels generous to Utah.
- BYU at UCF: UCF +6.5, as a letdown spot after the Notre Dame win meets a stout Knights run defense.
- Tennessee at South Carolina: Over 50.5, with both offenses scoring plenty and the defenses giving up yards.
Whatever you pick, grab the comfort food, clear the couch, and settle in. Saturday’s slate has the makings of another chaotic night of college football.
