Week 3 of the college football slate wraps up with a fabulous matchup between the Arizona State Sun Devils and the BYU Cougars. The kickoff is set for 10:15 PM Eastern Time on Saturday night. Is there anything better than a late-night Top 25 battle?
Arizona State has started the season with a perfect 2-0 record against a couple of lesser opponents. BYU is also 2-0 and they’re coming off a huge upset over their archrival Utah.

Best Odds for BYU Cougars vs. Arizona State Sun Devils - September 18, 2021
What to Expect from the Arizona State Offense in Week 3
Though they’ve yet to face stiff competition, the Arizona State offense has been humming along nicely by averaging 39 points per game. Hotshot QB Jayden Daniels comes into this game with 307 passing yards and two touchdowns. The 6-3 185 pound junior has also picked up 165 yards on the ground. Daniels has a boatload of talent but he may have his work cut out for him against a stout BYU defense.
The Sun Devils offense has done most of their damage by running the football. This unit has averaged a robust 256 yards rushing per contest so far this year. Though the sledding will be much tougher against BYU, expect good ol’ Herm Edwards to pound the rock as much as he can. Running back Rachaad White is a legitimate playmaker who has already found the end zone four times so the Cougars will have to be focused on stopping him.
What to Expect from the BYU Defense in Week 3
It was pretty impressive to see how this BYU defense dismantled the Utah offense last weekend. Head coach Kalani Sitake loves to call aggressive blitzes so there’s no way he’ll let Daniels sit back in the pocket all night. The Coogs already have six sacks on the young season and they’ll be trying to add to that total against the Sun Devils.
Look for Sitake to send linebacker Payton Wilgar on some disguised blitzes to try and rattle Daniels early on in the game. Wilgar has 13 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks this year so he could be a major force against Arizona State. The Cougars secondary is also pretty decent with guys like Chaz Ah You and Hayden Livingston looking to pick off passes.
What to Expect from the BYU Offense in Week 3
Sure, the Cougars miss former gunslinger Zach Wilson under center but Jaren Hall has been a pleasant surprise so far this season. The young sophomore has thrown five touchdowns and no picks so far. Hall has also run for 128 yards to help keep the chains moving for BYU. We’ll be curious to see how Hall performs against Herm’s defense on Saturday night.
My goodness, where does BYU keep getting these huge running backs? Tyler Allgeier is a load at 5-11 and 220 pounds with a strong lower half. The sophomore comes into this game with 196 yards and a touchdown. If the Sun Devils stack the box to limit Allgeier, look for Sitake to call some deep passes to Neil Pau’u, who already has 145 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
What to Expect from the Arizona State Defense in Week 3
It’s hard to gauge if this Sun Devils’ defense will be better than the 2020 unit that allowed over 183 rushing yards per game. This year’s squad is only giving up 83 rushing yards per game but keep in mind they’ve only played Southern Utah and UNLV. Herm’s best defender this year looks to be Darien Butler, who has two interceptions and two sacks already.
Arizona State has gotten good pressure on opposing quarterbacks through their first two games and have registered seven sacks. Keep an eye on DeAndre Pierce, a sixth-year senior defensive back who may be matched up with BYU’s best receiver (Pau’u). We all know that Herm will want to make BYU one-dimensional because he has to “play to win the game” (LOL).
Our Pick: UNDER 51
We don’t have a good feel for the side in this game. Arizona State has more team speed but BYU is tough to beat at home. We do love the Under though, for several reasons.
One, the Cougars are coming off a gigantic win over Utah in the Holy War. That was BYU’s first victory over the Utes since 2009. Needless to say, they are probably fat and happy coming into this matchup with the Sun Devils. We don’t expect BYU to be too crisp on offense, especially in the early going.
Another reason we love the Under is Arizona State’s strength of schedule. Sure, the Sun Devils’ offense has put up some gaudy numbers so far but they’ll be a bit shell-shocked by the sheer size of this BYU defensive line.
We see this as a low-scoring affair with someone winning 24-20. Take the Under! Best of luck!
