Alek Manoah UNDER 5.5 Strikeouts

Might as well start the new season off with a pick that makes us nervous! Manoah is a 6-6, 285-pound stud right-hander with some nasty stuff. This kid won 16 games last season with a miniscule ERA of only 2.24.

Fading Manoah is tough to do, but this Cardinals team doesn't strike out that much. In 2022, St. Louis was the 5th hardest team to strike out. Sure, Paul Goldschmidt strikes out often, but the rest of this young lineup puts the ball in play most of the time.

Faithful readers of our column know that we like to look for plays with some market support behind them. We have plenty of that with this play. The Under is juiced to -148 with this play over at Unibet.

Julio Urias OVER 5.5 Strikeouts

This one just looks way too easy! We're getting one of the most dominant lefties in the game going up against one of the weakest lineups. Urias struck out 166 batters last year and we're thinking that number will only go up in 2023.

The Diamondbacks have added some nice pieces, but they'll still be one of the worst teams in the NL this season. Arizona struck out 8.28 times per game last season. Guys like Nick Ahmed, Evan Longoria, and Christian Walker are all batting well under .200 in their careers against Urias.

FanDuel has the Over priced at -142 and BetMGM isn't too far behind at -140. Let's roll with the Over and look for Urias to come out firing on all cylinders against the D'Backs.

Myles Straw OVER 0.5 Total Bases

Who the heck is Myles Straw? He's a slick little center-fielder that plays for the ever so lovable Cleveland Guardians. Straw bounced around the Astros organization for a few years before making his way to Cleveland in 2021.

Straw is only a career .247 hitter but we're expecting a decent amount of production from him in 2023. The 5-10, 178-pounder plays solid defense and has good speed on the basepaths. He racked up 21 stolen bases last season.

Going up against Seattle ace Luis Castillo will be tough, but we think Straw can scrounge up at least one hit to cash this Over. Spring Training doesn't mean a whole lot, but we like that Straw hit .364 this spring. We'll roll with the Over!
